Meet the Voluntary Committee of Lawyers

Dear Friends:

As you know, the "War on Drugs" has been a tragic policy failure, degrading public order and public health and eroding trust in the justice system and respect for the law.  Now you have a chance to participate in an intensive national effort underway to bring about a fundamental shift in our drug control policies.

If you haven't already met, let me introduce you to the Voluntary Committee of Lawyers!  The VCL is working successfully across the nation to amplify the voice of the legal profession, calling for a serious examination of the "War on Drugs" and its harmful consequences.

During National Alcohol Prohibition in the 1920s, a respected group of New York lawyers founded the original Voluntary Committee of Lawyers, building a national network to set up the state constitutional conventions that eventually led to the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.  The modern VCL is organizing lawyers and judges around the country today to criticize our current prohibition-style drug policies and to suggest workable alternative approaches.  Through state and loc al bar associations in New York, Colorado, Alabama, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Washington and other states, the VCL is spurring important discussions in professional circles that wield considerable influence in the policymaking process.

We are approaching a historic turning point in the drug policy debate.  In these troubling times, the fiscal strain of excessive incarceration is leading states to shift their criminal justice policies.  Violence from illegal drug markets is about to spill across the Mexican border.  Leading newspapers regularly highlight the disaster of the "War on Drugs."  The Obama Administration has also made some important signals recently.  Now is the time for the VCL to leverage its deep history and advance the mature legal dialogue about shifting to a more rational drug control policy.

Thanks to your support we can continue this important work.

We are expanding the VCL as a membership organization of lawyers, judges and other professionals, strengthening the call for an exit strategy for the "War on Drugs."  You are invited to join our growing network by becoming a member of the VCL today.  Click here.

To learn more about the VCL and its membership and activities, please join us on Law Day, Friday, May 1st, at the Culture Center on Manhattan's Upper West Side for a reception and presentation of the VCL's Joseph H. Choate, Jr. Award for Leadership to U.S. District Court Judge Robert Sweet.  Then get dinner with us afterward and continue what is sure to be an evening of engaging discussion.

We welcome you to join the VCL and help us push for sanity in our drug control policies.  Thank you very much for your support, and we look forward to working together with you!

Very truly yours,

Roger E. Goodman

Executive Director

Happy Birthday ASA!

Happy Birthday ASA!

Hello ASA Supporter,

Seven years ago a handful of patients, doctors, and providers came together to stand up against federal intimidation and to chart out a plan for protecting safe access to medical cannabis. Today, we have turned that handful into thousands of committed advocates across the country. Through ASA we have built a strong, engaged movement.

Please donate $100 to ASA today to support this growing movement!

As a movement we have celebrated countless victories in the realm of access and extended patient protections. As a movement we have mourned together as our brothers and sisters left us. And as a movement we have shouted and protested the sight of our friends and family being harassed, detained, persecuted and jailed.

I have been truly amazed and touched by the family that has come together to fight for safe and legal access. Over the past seven years I have had the honor of meeting many of you. I have listened to story after story about the benefits that medical cannabis has brought to you and your loved ones. I have listened to countless stories about the hardships of lack of access and police harassment. And what is truly amazing is that in each of those stories you have also shared the inspiration of your willingness to stand up for yourself and those around you.

I carry those stories with me, as does the ASA staff. Your experiences define the work we do and the manner in which we do it.

We have already accomplished so much together. Our successful lobbying, media and legal campaigns have resulted in important court precedents, new sentencing standards, and more compassionate community guidelines. Together we have rolled back public ambivalence and media bias to make medical cannabis a national issue.

Now the time has come to ramp up our work - we have an administration that is open to moving safe access forward, and now we must show our strength and share our vision. This is ASA's most important year and we need your support to move forward. Opportunity is there but we must Engage for Change! Please donate $100 today to support ASA's work this year and beyond.

Happy B-Day ASA family!

Yours truly,

Steph Sherer

TV Ad Campaign Boosts Medical Marijuana Bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 21, 2009

TV Ad Campaign Boosts Medical Marijuana Bill
With Senate Vote Nearing, Spots With Real Patients to Air in Chicago, Peoria, and Decatur/Springfield/Champaign

CONTACT: Bruce Mirken, MPP director of communications ............... 415-585-6404 or 202-215-4205

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS -- With a Senate floor vote on medical marijuana legislation expected by the end of the month, supporters are taking to the airwaves with a pair of TV spots in which real Illinois medical marijuana patients tell their stories. The spots, introduced at a Statehouse press conference today, have begun airing in the Chicago, Peoria, and Decatur/Springfield/Champaign media markets.

The ads, featuring Lucie Macfarlane of Joliet and Lisa Lange Van Camp of Lindenhurst, can be viewed at www.mpp.org/ads.

"I used to be on so many narcotics that I had lost my desire to live," said Macfarlane, who suffers from neurofibromatosis, a painful disease that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue. "Marijuana literally helped save my life by allowing me to cut back on the highly addictive painkillers that I had been prescribed for over a decade. I'm now totally off Oxycontin and am only taking Norco and marijuana for my pain. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my story with other Illinoisans, some of whom may be in need of this law more than I am."

"Nobody should ever have to live in fear of arrest for treating their illness," said Lisa Lange Van Camp, a Lindenhurst resident who lives with severe osteoarthritis, complicated by a rare condition, Dercum's disease. To date, Lisa has had both knees replaced, had one spinal fusion and currently needs five more spinal levels fused. "I should have the right to make my own treatment decisions regarding medical cannabis, based on my physician's recommendation, and to do so with dignity.  I hope our lawmakers hear this message loud and clear and pass the medical marijuana bill without delay."

"Seriously ill patients like Lisa and Lucie should not have to fear being arrested for using a medicine that can, and has, helped them," said Sen. William Haine (D-Alton), a four-term former state's attorney and sponsor of the medical marijuana bill. "It is our hope that my colleagues in the Senate will recognize that there are many patients out there who could benefit from this legislation and pass this sensible, compassionate bill now. We have changed the bill significantly to meet the concerns of law enforcement. It's time for the state of Illinois to meet the concerns of her citizens who are suffering and might be helped by the restricted use of marijuana."

Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie), sponsor of the House version of the medical marijuana bill, said he hopes the new ads remind people how important the legislation is for real, suffering Illinois citizens.

"These ads are a forceful reminder about what this bill is really about -- providing for the health and comfort of seriously ill patients who seek relief from a proven safe, effective treatment," Lang said.

Dennis Sobin Escapes from Jail!

[Courtesy of Prisons Foundation] Even as our director Dennis Sobin prepared to go to jail in October 2009 for violating a court order by attending a City Hall public hearing, he planned his escape. We were pleased to furnish him with the escape tools he needed. They consisted primarily of writing paper and music composition paper. Dennis explains: "That's all I needed to get out of prison. I used the writing paper to author books and articles, and the music paper to compose music. In this way my mind was able to escape from jail, even as my body stayed behind." On April 16, 2009, with his six-month sentence completed, Dennis's body was able to join his mind on the outside. Welcome home Dennis! Don't forget: When in Washington, DC, please visit the Prison Art Gallery, 1600 K St. NW, Suite 501, Washington, DC where you will find over 1000 works of art by imprisoned artists from across America.

20-Year Veteran Cop Shows You How to Help LEAP End the "Drug War"

Get Your LEAP Badge Today!

Dear Friends,

Have you noticed that there's been a great awakening about the harms of the "war on drugs"? The media and politicians are paying attention like never before.

I'm writing to tell you about
a new way you can help keep this wave going and show your support for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition at the same time.

When I co-founded LEAP seven years ago I used to say I would not see the end of the "war on drugs" in my lifetime. But over these past weeks I've changed my mind about that, because things are changing. And fast.

Just look at all the media attention LEAP has been getting lately: 30-year veteran federal anti-drug agent Terry Nelson was recently on Anderson Cooper's CNN show, Judge James Gray was on Fox Business Channel and CNN, and LEAP speakers have recently been featured in newspapers like the Los Angeles Times, the Miami Herald and the Houston Chronicle.

More people are talking about the "drug war" than ever before, and you can help continue this conversation by wearing an official LEAP badge lapel pin just like our law enforcement speakers do.  When you wear the LEAP shield, people will ask you about it, giving you the opportunity to talk about the harms of prohibition and invite them to join our movement.

Please go to
http://www.CopsSayLegalizeDrugs.com/badge right now and make a donation of just five bucks (or more, if you can afford it), and we'll mail you a badge so you can start wearing it and helping to build our movement.

Of course, our efforts aren't just all talk.  LEAP is making a real impact on prohibitionist policies both on a national level and regionally:

  • On Capitol Hill, Senator Jim Webb of Virginia just introduced a bill to create a blue ribbon commission to investigate whether we should keep sending so many people to jail for drugs (you and I already know we shouldn't, but the commission will help more politicians to realize it). This is exactly what LEAP's education specialist Howard Wooldridge has been advocating in the halls of Congress; last year, he met with all 535 congressional offices, asking them to create a commission -- and now it's happening!
  • In November, LEAP was proudly involved in helping pass - by a two-to-one margin - a voter initiative to decriminalize marijuana in Massachusetts.  Now, citizens there no longer face arrest just for possessing small amounts.

These are just two examples of how our cops are making more of an impact than ever before. But we simply cannot do this important work by ourselves. We need your help.

Imagine for a moment what we can accomplish when thousands of citizens stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our law enforcers, not only with their dollars but by being advocates on the street and helping to build this movement through one-on-one conversations sparked by simple gold badges.

Please make a one-time donation or monthly pledge of just five dollars today to
receive your official LEAP badge lapel pin.

Of course, it's great if you want to donate more, because we sure need it. It costs money to put our speakers in front of legislators, media and other audiences around the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Whether you can give $5.00 or $500.00 to get your LEAP badge, this type of grassroots effort is how this movement has gained so much momentum and it's how we'll win the war against the "drug war." We will succeed because no one can make a legitimate argument against what our law enforcers and civilian supporters have seen with our own eyes.

So please,
show your support for LEAP today with a donation so you can show your support for LEAP tomorrow by proudly displaying our shield on your lapel, shirt, backpack or hat. It's fast, it's easy and it's time.

Sincerely,

Peter Christ
Co-Founder
Law Enforcement Against Prohibition

P.S. Five dollars probably isn't a lot of money to you, but it adds up to a lot for LEAP when combined with generous donations of hundreds or thousands of other supporters just like you, especially if those gifts are sustaining monthly pledges.  So, please, go to
http://www.CopsSayLegalizeDrugs.com/badge to do your part by chipping in today.

Take Action Alert: National Call-In Day Thursday, April 23

Dear Friends, On Thursday, April 23, thousands of people across the country will phone their members of Congress to call for an end to the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine. We hope that you will mark your calendar and join us. Your calls will make an important difference. The National Call-In Day is part of Crack the Disparity National Month of Advocacy, a month-long coordinated push to eliminate the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine. The current law: • overstates the relative danger of crack cocaine compared to powder cocaine; • contributes to the growth of our prison population, increasing the financial burden on taxpayers; • disproportionately affects African Americans; and • uses limited federal resources on low-level street dealers rather than on the major drug traffickers. Twenty-three years of a failed policy is long enough! It's time to end this unjust and disproportionate sentencing policy. To participate, mark your calendar for April 23, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202.224.3121, and ask to speak to your representatives in the Senate and House. Urge them to support and co-sponsor H.R. 265, the Drug Sentencing Reform and Cocaine Kingpin Trafficking Act in the House and legislation in the Senate that eliminates the 100 to 1 disparity between crack and powder cocaine. You should place three calls because you have one representative and two senators. Use this link (talking points and script) to help you with your calls to Congress: http://sentencingproject.org/AdvocacyMaterialDetails.aspx?AdvocacyMaterialID=117 - The Sentencing Project
