Dear friends,
Weâre making amazing progress toward ending the war on marijuana, but a major obstacle stands in our way â Michele Leonhart. The DEAâs acting administrator is a Bush holdover whoâs blocked scientific research and overseen dozens of medical marijuana raids. Now sick and disabled veterans are suffering because of her hardline stance against medical marijuana patients. We canât tolerate a DEA administrator with such backwards ideas. Under Michele Leonhartâs direction, the DEA is advising the Veterans Administration (VA) to prohibit its doctors from recommending medical marijuana to their patients, even in states where itâs legal. A Bush holdover is standing in the way of reform, and we need to stop her. The Senate will soon consider whether to confirm her as the permanent administrator of the DEA. Urge the Senate to block her nomination. VA doctors are barred from recommending medical marijuana even though many veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and other ailments have found that itâs the best medicine for their symptoms. Veterans who survived the wars abroad have returned home only to become victims of the war on drugs. Urge the Senate to demand a new DEA administrator. Sincerely, Bill Piper  |

Dear friends, Even a directive from the president hasnât stopped the DEA from bullying the medical marijuana community. Help us hold the DEA accountable by donating today. Last month, DEA agents raided the home of a Colorado medical marijuana supplier who was providing sick people with the medicine they need. The raid came months after President Obama told federal law enforcement to stop arresting people who grow or supply medical marijuana in states where itâs legal. Weâre determined to end the harassment of medical marijuana patients and providers. By making a donation today, you can help hold the DEA responsible for its abuses. The DEA is defying the presidentâs directive on medical marijuana under the watchful eye of acting director Michele Leonhart, a Bush administration holdover and drug war zealot. We're mounting a campaign to block her from becoming the permanent head of the DEA. With your generous support, we can take the power to halt progress out of Michele Leonhart's hands. Donate today and help us demand an appointee who will approach our nationâs drug issues with reason, science and compassion. Sincerely, Bill Piper  |

DEA Marijuana Seizures Nearly Double As Marijuana Production in Mexico Grows by 35%
Officials continue to waste money on futile attempts to stem production and violence, ignoring the only solution: a regulated marijuana market
CONTACT: Aaron Houston, MPP director of government relations â¦â¦ 202-905-2009 or [email protected]
WASHINGTON, D.C. â The total amount of marijuana seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration nearly doubled from 1,539 metric tons in 2008 to 2,980 metric tons in 2009, according to numbers disclosed by the DEA as part of their budget request for 2011.
Meanwhile, the cultivation of marijuana in Mexico rose 35% in 2009 to nearly 30,000 acres, according to a report released by the U.S. State Department. The report also revealed that between $8 and $25 billion in drug profits were laundered by Mexican drug lords during the same period.
âWhen is the United States government going to realize that they will never eliminate the demand for marijuana, but they can regulate its production?â said Aaron Houston, MPP director of government relations. âThese latest numbers confirm that the only thing an increase in the amount of marijuana seizures by the DEA will do is force more marijuana to be grown by gangs in Mexico, lining the pockets of drug cartels, and further fueling the bloodshed along our border and in our respective countries. The only real solution to this crisis is to tax and regulate marijuana.â
These latest figures come just days after high-ranking officials from the U.S. and Mexico concluded a three-day conference meant to outline ways the two nations could reduce the illicit drug-trade-associated violence that continues to plague the U.S.-Mexican border. Unfortunately, the obvious and sensible strategy of taxing and regulating marijuana was not mentioned. The Obama administration instead opted to throw more money at the problem in the form of a $1.4 billion aid package to combat Mexican drug cartels. The Obama administration is also seeking $310 million in its 2011 budget for drug enforcement aid to Mexico.Â
With more than 124,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. MPP believes that the best way to minimize the harm associated with marijuana is to regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. For more information, please visit mpp.org.

Dear friends,
You wonât believe whatâs happening on your dime! San Diego law enforcement called in the DEA this month to assist with SWAT-style raids of 14 medical marijuana dispensaries. Local and federal authorities arrested dozens of people and physically accosted at least one patient.  We have to stop the district attorney behind this persecution campaign! News footage even shows local police pulling a handcuffed patient out of his wheelchair. San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has long defied California's medical marijuana law. Now she's using federal resources to crack down on dispensaries and aid her re-election campaign. Donât let a rogue prosecutor and the DEA use any more of your tax dollars to hurt patients and harass the people who provide their medicine. Join me in urging the governor and attorney general to hold Dumanis accountable. Sincerely, Bill Piper  |
Dear ASA Supporter,
We never expected that the DEA would defy the public statements of both the U.S. President and the Attorney General in such an arrogant and brazen way.
And yet yesterday, the Drug Enforcement Administration raided a legal, permitted San Francisco medical cannabis dispensing collective against the will of the President and the Department of Justice... and we need you to respond RIGHT NOW!
In early February national media attention exploded around statements from a White House spokesperson and from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, telling the press that DEA raids would no longer continue, and that an end to such raids, according to Holder, was ânow U.S. policy.â
And DEA's response?
They thumbed their noses at the President and immediately raided a legal dispensing collective and, according to the San Francisco Police, did not even inform local cops! DEA claimed that the permit-holding dispensary was "violating state law," but went on to say that evidence was "under seal" and could not be shared with the public.
The DEA is out of line and out of control, and this raid is nothing if not vindictive. Even if there was a violation of state law:
1. Why where there no arrests?
2. Why were local cops not involved?
3. Why are United States Federal Agents interpreting and enforcing California state law without consulting California officials?
4. Why was the collective not given due process through the proper authorities, but rather ransacked with a "smash and grab" raid?
DEA has twisted the words of the U.S. Attorney General, and thought that by saying publicly "they violated state law" that they could continue raiding whenever they want. Well that doesnât fly. We DEMAND that the DEA stop immediately, and that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder reprimand DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart for her blatant insubordination and violation of the ânew American policy.â
Now it's up to you, and all it takes is two phone calls, one to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and the other straight to the DEA.
Please call the U.S. Attorney General at (202) 353-1555 and say:
Hi, my name is _____________. First I want to thank you for your numerous public statements verifying the end of DEA raids on legal medical marijuana dispensaries in California. But on Wednesday the DEA went against your word and the word of the President of the United States by raiding a permitted dispensary in San Francisco. We respectfully demand that you issue a statement condemning and officially ending these raids until the Obama Administration has had a chance to review the new policy.
When youâre done, call the DEA at (202) 307-8000, ask for Administrator Michele Leonhart, and say:
Hi, my name is ___________. The U.S. Attorney General and the President of the United States have both made high-profile public statements, saying DEA raids on legal medical marijuana dispensaries is no longer U.S. policy. Yet your DEA raided a legal, permit-holding San Francisco dispensary yesterday, in conflict with these statements. This disgraceful and anti-democratic. Why is your agency not listening to the policy statements of our elected leaders and your boss? Is this how you'll run DEA if you are appointed in the Obama Administration? We demand that you STOP it immediately!
Sincerely,
George Pappas

P.S. Please forward this message to all your friends and family so that we can generate a response big enough to get officials to act!
Dear friends:
When I spoke with Barack Obama at a Capitol Hill reception in September 2004 (two months before his election to the U.S. Senate), he said he agreed with me that states should have the right to determine their own medical marijuana policies without federal interference.
That was the beginning of a series of events that culminated two days ago, when Attorney General Eric Holder announced â while standing next to the current DEA administrator â there will be no more DEA raids on medical marijuana establishments in California or elsewhere. This is significant, given that Holder is the "top cop" of the nation and the boss of the DEA!
Medical marijuana patients, dispensary owners and staffers, growers, MPP staffers, and other activists are breathing a sigh of relief ... having been terrorized by the Bush administration for eight years. How did we get to this point?
Please watch this one-minute video clip of Obama responding to one of our campaign volunteers in New Hampshire on August 21, 2007, in the heat of the presidential primary campaign ...
After that, Obama publicly reiterated that he would discontinue Bush's policy, including in an interview with the editorial board of an Oregon paper. And, since Obama was elected, we've kept in touch with high-level staffers in the White House and on his transition team, as a way of keeping this issue on their radar screen until the policy was officially changed.Â
Then, when Bush holdovers in the DEA raided five medical marijuana dispensaries in California in the days after Obama took office on January 20, MPP barraged the media and MPP members barraged the Obama administration to demand an end to the DEA's raids (and to fire the Bush holdovers).
And, of course, MPP and a host of other organizations â including conservative groups like Citizens Against Government Waste â have built support for the annual vote (from 2003 to 2007) on the House floor for an amendment that would have forbidden the DEA and the Justice Department from spending taxpayer money to subvert state-level medical marijuana laws.
All of this advocacy by thousands of patients, dispensary owners, volunteers, paid lobbyists, medical associations, and so many others has paid off. You did it; we all did it.
Now it's time for us to take our work to the next level by (1) enacting medical marijuana laws in Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and New York; (2) improving California's and Rhode Island's existing medical marijuana laws in order to provide licenses to dispensaries in both states; (3) reopening the federal "compassionate IND program" so that patients in all 50 states can obtain legal access to medical marijuana; and (4) passing our medical marijuana ballot initiative in Arizona in November 2010.
Please consider making a financial donation to all of this work. Thanks so much ...
Sincerely,
Rob Kampia

REPORTER:Â "Right after the inauguration, there were some raids on California medical marijuana dispensaries. Was that a deliberate decision by you, by the Justice Department? As a prediction of policy going forward, do you expect those sorts of raids to continue? (muffled) The president said during the campaign â"
ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER:Â "Well, what the president said during the campaign, you'll be surprised to know, will be consistent with what we'll be doing here in law enforcement. He was my boss during the campaign, he is formally and technically and by law my boss now, and so what he said during the campaign is now American policy."
