Drug War Issues

The Chronicle may have had a respite, but law enforcement corruption related to drug prohibition took no break.

In Charleston, South Carolina, a former Charleston County Sheriff's detention deputy was arrested June 4 for smuggling synthetic cannabinoids into the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. Former deputy Karmen Robinson went down after cameras caught her entering a storage room with a male inmate shortly before two other inmates passed out at the jail. She is charged with misconduct by an employee, possession with intent to distribute, and furnishing contraband.

In Phoenix, Arizona, a former Madison County, North Carolina, sheriff's deputy was arrested June 14 on a North Carolina warrant for providing drugs and other contraband to inmates at the Madison County jail. Former Chief Deputy Coy Phillips is accused of felony counts of furnishing controlled substances to inmates, furnishing deadly weapons to inmates, and involuntary servitude. He also faces misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol and tobacco to inmates.

In Mobile, Alabama, a Prichard police officer was arrested June 16 for covering up crimes by violent individuals, conducting unlawful traffic stops with fellow Prichard police officers, and taking bribes to allow marijuana traffickers to move unimpeded. Officer Emmanuel Naman Dotch II multiple criminal counts, including civil rights violations, conspiracy, taking bribes, tampering with evidence, and extortion.

In Phoenix, Illinois, a former Phoenix police officer was sentenced June 18 to 63 months in federal prison for extorting people for cash and drugs during traffic stops. Former officer Antoine Larry had been convicted earlier this year on conspiracy, extortion, and attempted extortion charges. Larry and fellow Phoenix Officer Jarrett Snowden took money and drugs from people they pulled over in exchange for favorable treatment, such as reducing charges, avoiding a vehicle tow, or allowing drivers to leave without receiving citations. Snowden pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge before Larry's trial and admitted his role in the scheme. He will be sentenced on October 27.

In New York City, a former NYPD officer was sentenced June 22 to 90 months in federal prison. Andrew Nguyen was convicted of taking bribes from a drug trafficker to transport dope, including one shipment of eight kilos of cocaine, while carrying his NYPD credentials and an NYPD parking placard. He received $30,000 for his efforts and was seeking more when he was arrested. He was convicted of conspiring to solicit and receive bribes, conspiring to distribute narcotics, and possessing a firearm in connection with the conspiracy to distribute narcotics, in connection with his role as an NYPD officer. He pleaded guilty to all counts in January
