Just the Canary in the Cave

Have enjoyed reading the well reasoned thoughts and arguments here about this issue. But I question the depth of outrage of most people. The drug war issue is important not only for it's own sake but because it is the clearest example of how the Constitution (not to mention reason) can be arbitrarily ignored by the Federal government. And this is what worries me most: That the insanity of the drug war can lie in the open for so long and be accepted as normal by so many Americans, even if they don't agree with it, means that the will to resist has been bred out of us. By accepting, I mean that we are willing to vote for politicians whose parties openly support this obviously unconstitutional insanity. I contend that if we were principled individuals and serious about the issue, we would not do this. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, my conclusion is that we are doomed as a free society. Even if the marijuana prohibition ended tomorrow, it would not change the situation, no more than the end of alcohol prohibition did in the 30s. We will go complacently on.

Thank Harry

Anslinger was a smart guy taking this to the international level to have his policies frozen into treaties. I actually think the web is going to help people be more aware of their governments, though it may take awhile. The move from newspaper to radio to TV heavily condensed the sources of information people were exposed to. Now information that can completely alter your way of thinking doesn't have to come from an underground bookstore, your friend can send it to you in a heartbeat. It *is* scary what could happen to long-term investigative journalism if the big players go under.

Wait a minute....

I think you guys missed the mark..... Complacency....? How about spin and sugar coating....? Hell I almost supported the plan when it was introduced.... You know why? Because If you read it , it really doesn't aim at domestic folks. It's mainstream point was that drugs fund terrorism.... the "T" word... Bang Pass!! Time we look at it for what it was at the time.... a mini economic stimulus package. We've got to educate VOTERS. Hey also, if ya think about it, had all of us had internet back then, think it'd pass?My last name is Roach, been a canary for far too long!
