BECAUSE

THEY CAN

So criminals can make money selling and ripping people off.

I am all for legalizing weed but I think we should keep the laws tough on harder drugs.

define "harder"

Do you mean the most dangerous drugs? Like alcohol and tobacco? Or the most addictive drugs, like, for instance, alcohol and tobacco? Or, like the prohibitionists, do you think that only YOUR drug of choice should be legal?

why it's not legal

if drugs were legal the government and big business would lose out on tons of money. First off the big companies would lose money because no one would need their fucking drug tests that keep many highly skilled people from working due to drug use. Next would be the prison system; they would lose money 'cause the majority of the people in them are there for non-violent drug charges. So the people who build new prisons would go broke, as well as lawyers and judges in the super-overcrowded criminal justice system. Just think how efficient they could be with real criminals if all of the drug users were gone. The police and drug task forces wouldn't like it either 'cause then they would have to go after really violent criminals.
The traffickers would not like it either because the only people who benefit from drug prohibition are the smugglers.

Mormons and Mexicans

Mormons were coming back from Mexico with pot habits - that was bad.

Unions didn't like the competition from Mexican Labor.

Drug War History

But the drug taxes brings

But the drug taxes bring money, though...
