But today, I found a drug warrior that's willing to say what the rest are probably thinking. His name is Wayne C. Williams and he's been putting drug users in jail for 32 years. Williams was so disturbed by an op-ed from former cop/drug policy reformer Howard Wooldridge that he wrote a crazy letter to the Amarillo Globe News complaining that drug addicts don't get punished enough:
In the war on drugs, one can be diagnosed with the disease of drug addiction merely by being found in possession of drugs. At that point, one is then broken down and stripped of their family and property. They are removed from their job and their home, banished into a dark brutal hole amongst violent thugs and sociopaths, and once every last thing they have has been taken away, they are asked to start acting normal.
It's really a perfect mess as far as public policies go, which is why it's so damned hard to find a defender of the drug war who isn't paid to participate in it.

Too many people use rehabilitation as a way to stay out of jail or prison.Rarely does one find the sheer cruelty of the drug war expressed with such unabashed self-righteousness. This man is literally insisting that we must smash victims of drug addiction in order to demonstrate the harms of drug use. It just tells you everything you need to know about the drug war and the people who carry it out on a daily basis.
A person hooked on drugs won't get clean for his family, but only when he hits rock bottom and wants help for himself.

Persecution Vs. Regulation and Taxation
Not only do the policies he promotes do little to deter drug use (only about 3 to 5 percent of drug users are actually arrested every year) but it's sad that his hatred for drug users and obsession with persecuting them has greatly overshadowed any true desire to protect kids in this country. The end result has been for several decades we have placed large profit in the hands of illicit drug dealers and have allowed them to flood our residential areas and schools.

I don't understand how people who use alcohol can be comfortable with themselves for telling people who use marijuana that they are criminals. They NEED to explain how they can morally use alcohol while they tell other good folks they can't use weed. They also NEED to explain how trying to force pregnant women and mean/reckless drunks to use alcohol instead of marijuana makes us more safe, when it would seem to make us less safe. I've KNOWN mean or reckless drunks whose behavior was more or less tolerable when they also had access to weed. They were poor so often they didn't have access to weed. So much the worse for the awesomely adorable little boy whose father liked to kick him when daddy got drunk. When's the last fricking time you heard of a head doing something like that?

I moved here from California, and yes I can post this since Texas is where I grew up! Being back here has been a very rude experience. I find that most of the Law Enforcement is very under-educated when it comes to persons with addictions. It is a problem that jail is not going to solve. I don't know about most of you Texan's, but if this Cop and other Law Enforcement Departments decided to get educated maybe new laws could be passed in order to help. I know for a fact most people outside the legal field have no idea how much money is used for court costs, probation fees and many other hidden fees associated with the legal system. It is no wonder the Cops and Courts want to keep throwing people in the jail. I have seen so much since being back and I am shocked and sad at what I see in the Law Enforcement of Texas!!!! I would rather see the pervert next door in jail, since he is always on the prowl, but no, not the case here. In California they have a system called Drug Court. It has a 70 percent success rate! If people complete successfully the program, a deal is made with the court to dismiss the Misdemeanor charges, therefore allowing the individual back into the work force so as to be productive rather then a burden. Texas Law is in such need of reform!!!!! Texas Law Enforcement is in such need of Education!!!!

Why don't we go for uneducated !!,when I was in High school a zillion years back our graduation class was that of 304,w/# 1 being the smartest and #304? guess!!!. I was in the 80's range meaning I was a goof off but relativily smart,#'s 303 and 304 were driving to 8th grade,gives you an idea where these two were and they were best friends,strangely neither were ever drafted,we're talking early 60's here,anyway both were always in one form of trouble or another ,but needless to say even w/yet one other choice they found a home in the police force,then after I returned from Vietnam they moved on to become State cops,...I firmly do not beleave intelligence is a pre-requsite to being a cop, now I know that most probation and parole officers either have to attend college or the like because essentially they need how to deal w/people,understanding etc.due to a med.MJ bust for my cancer I had some experience w/that,fairly recently. As one w/an MA,I had no trouble talking w/the numerous people I had to deal with ,PO's councelors,the like but w/the actual State cops that lied their way into my house,communication was almost non-existant,and I was calm,if not ill and weak,more than nice and honest to a fault,[honesty is not always a virtue ] they are or were of one mind ...I committed a ''heinouss act '' and needed to be treated like shit,and put away forever,so as not to be harmfull to myself or anyone else!,anyway like I said ,their was no communication,they are machines,that should be oiled not payed,and this ladies and gentlemen....suks!!! no they do not know a lot about a lot of things that they should,If I were voluntarily placing myself into a dangerous place like they're in I'd damn sure want to know more that how to pull a trigger or drive a car fast..

Alcohol VS Marijuana: Two failed drug policies
I think we need to be careful about suggesting marijuana should be legal the same way alcohol is or implying such a policy. To me, both policy approaches in this country are a disaster and have resulted in widespread marijuana and alcohol sales and marketing everywhere where youth congregate. You are just trading one out-of-control policy for another.

I could never get why it should be a function of law enforcement to diagnose my illness and force me recover from it -- BUT -- If addiction to a dangerous drug warrants violent police intervention, why aren't the families of suspected cigarette smokers and alcoholics being terrorized by riot-geared, ski-masked SWAT teams? Surely they deserve to be included in the "cure".

And it could put a lot more people in prison, kill more people innocently, or any other of the problems associated with the present prohibition called the "drug war"! More SWAT raids? Cops (DEA) need to stay out of the physician/patient relationship! When are people going to see it is not working! Maybe they will prohibit McDonald's quarter pounders. Since marijuana is clearly much less dangerous to life and limb than alcohol (the feds don't even keep track of marijuana related deaths!), the closer the law comes to reflecting that reality the better, I would think.

We have too many problems with alcohol legalization to repeat the same mistakes with marijuana. I want drug policies that don't encourage drug use but discourage it in an intelligent manner. But that also will never happen as long as we have drug dealers selling marijuana and other drugs in our schools and residential areas. Marijuana may not be as dangerous as alcohol but there is a level of potential danger nevertheless, especially with high potency marijuana growing in popularity. I have no desire to see marijuana distributed and marketed the way alcohol currently is: billboards, TV ads, widespread sales in residential areas. The marijuana market should be strictly regulated and taxed and as low profile as possible.
