I was just perusing my back editions of The Georgia Straight, Vancouver's lone voice that's not controlled by Canwest Global Media. I found a letter to the paper that claims that: "The prohibition of cannabis/hemp/marijuana began with the prohibition of opium, which itself began with the Anti-Asian Riot in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1907. Ottawa evidently sent our future Prime Minister and ghost talker (he conversed regularly with his dead mother and was famous for crediting her with some of his best ideas) William Lyon MacKenzie-King. This paragon of wisdom decreed that as the riot was in opposition to the Chinese Opium dens and as these dens were responsible (this'll sound familiar) for white women and girls consorting with the heathens. So, from a nut case that became our country's leader, we get 100 years of tyranny and racism that still exists to this day. I always thought it was the British Guilt for 100 years of forcing the Chinese to buy Indian opium in exchange for tea that was responsible. Why does the source always end up to be racist?This story was in response to an article a student of history wrote about the 1907 riot, which has been buried by the white media but I had heard of it somewhere. I was married to a Chinese girl and her dad was probably here for it. Just kidding, he wasn't really that old. Sorry Pop. She told me the Chinese words for white people and for heroin were the same.
