Attorney General Terry Goddard said Tuesday he might be willing to consider legalizing marijuana if a way can be found to control its distribution - and figure out who has been smoking it.
Goddard said marijuana sales make up 75 percent of the money that Mexican cartels use for other operations, including smuggling other drugs and fighting the Mexican army and police.
He said that makes fighting drug distribution here important to cut off that cash. He acknowledged those profits could be slashed if possession of marijuana were not a crime in Arizona.[East Valley Tribune]

Considering that fewer than 5% of consumers come in contact with the criminal justice system for marijuana violations each year, regulation is the only way to take the profit out of crime.

The Attorney General should think about enforcing "The Rule of Law" instead of creating his own "world of law." This guy has no concept of evil and the people who profit from the destruction of neighborhoods and families. What a Moral Moron!!

By continuing prohibition we are making sure the drug dealers really "clean up"! The prohibitionists are right in bed with the drug kingpins. Yes, we must continue prohibition. Then we will continue to enrich the kingpins and "international dealers". We will guarantee that death and murder will be exported to Arizona by the Mexican cartels (since law enforcement can't seem to stop them). And we will continue to support a good supply of drugs to our high schools! International drug dealers! Sounds like a good group to support! That is, if you don't love your kids!
Legalizing drugs is not about making drugs more available. It is about reversing the unwanted side effects of prohibition. Legalize, Regulate and Tax Marijuana
Marijuana use should be legalized, regulated and taxed just like alcohol. In North Carolina for example, you can only purchase liquor in state run Alcohol Beverage Control stores. Each of the 50 states could easily set up Marijuana shops -- create possibly millions of jobs (farmers, salespeople, usage products: rolling papers, pipes, etc.) and BILLIONS in tax revenue. Plus by selling pot at a price lower than the dealers - the dealers would be out of business.

The truth will always bear itself out. We have had 10 years now of California's quasi-legal distribution system. Their state hasn't gone to pot :-) In fact, they are enjoying a solid source of revenue from it. We have 13 states allowing medical marijuana. We have Mass joining Ohio and other decrim states. Obama's "tell us how to run the country" website shows a signficant portion of questions about legalizing marijuana. And now Atty. Gnl. of NM wants to outright legalize it for that state?
There's just too many arguments in favor of legalization of marijuana, and perhaps even drugs with some tight controls.
Barney Frank's bill may well die on the floor but it's only a matter of time before the truth bears itself out.
