Southeast Asia Plans to be Drug-Free by 2015

The plan is to get all the kids to stop smoking and drinking, which will result in the elimination of all drug use within 6 years:

KUCHING, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The International Federation of Non-governmental Organisations for the Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse (IFNGO) has targeted a drug-free Asean by 2015 to counter the widespread abuse of "gateway drugs" among the region's younger generation, who are susceptible to the lure of alcohol and tobacco.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said today children and the youth who were addicted to such "gateway drugs" provided the recruitment base for addiction to illicit drugs such as heroin and cocaine.

"Fighting the war against drugs is a formidable and difficult task. I am certain that with concerted effort from all members of the Asean IFNGO network, we can bear down on the problem of gateway drugs and achieve our goal of a drug-free Asean by 2015," he said. [Bernama.com]

And I am certain that by 2015 I will have, through deep concentration, mastered the art of levitation and learned to shoot laser beams from my eyes. If I fail, it will be everyone’s fault but my own.

Looking for the easiest way to join the anti-drug war movement? You've found it!

Is it just me?

Or are people getting stupider by the day? In six years in Asia, we'll see the same abject failure that we always see when drug warriors unleash their idiocy, the same human rights abuses, the same growing police state tactics. And where will drug use be? The same place as it ever was - all over!

Quick, someone do a study

Whenever a local or national govt. publicizes a new goal to Get Tough on Drugs, someone needs to fund research to find the current levels of abuse, availability, et.al.

Politicians

These nation's 'leaders' are certifiably insane.

A future government will need to seize their official assets for redistribution to the victims caught up in their ccriminal 'judiciary'.

Tired Line

It's sad to yet another declaration of this sort -- how many times now has the US declared the same thing only to never have it come to fruition and not report the abject failure when the goal isn't met? This is ridiculous -- nothing but lip service and a phenomenal waste of money. They're acting as if this hasn't been tried before! Think about it -- the US has failed at the same thing time and time again, and we spend $70 billion a year trying. They are kidding themselves, and wasting a lot of time and money in the process. They should end prohibition immediately and pass the savings onto their people...

Yours,

Chad

Vietnam

this is along the same lines of an article i read on this site a while back talking about how vietnam declared it was going to be 100 percent drug free by last august or september. i guess they aren't drug free yet or the U.S. would have copied their game plan for use at home. this whole drug war is simultaneously sad and funny. sad because of how many peoples lives are ruined, but funny because our government does the same thing over and over again expecting different results. isn't that the definition of insanity? heh

It'll Never Happen -- Look at the Philippines

On December 25, 2003, The Philippine Star reported that the campaign to rid the island of drugs by 2010 has resulted in cramming jails and paralyzing the justice system. It's nearly five years later and about a year away from 2010 -- I haven't heard any reports lately that the Philippines is even anywhere close to being drug-free.

In fact, drug use seems to be rolling right along, and what's very revealing is that just last month the head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said an illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City was thriving partly because of crooked officials and personnel of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor). They can't even keep drugs out of high security areas -- how do they ever hope to be drug-free? Liars. They need to legalize, tax, and regulate. You don't need to be a brain surgeon to figure this out, just not a politician :)

a bankroll joint

It's just an excuse to channel out more taxpayers funds to their respective cronies. It creates a senseless society when draconian punishments implemented have failed to make the kids from many generations fully understood about the consequences of their own actions. Developed countries must continuously voice out their concerns..
