"Marijuana Signature Project" Not as Cool as it Sounds

Watch out folks, the Marijuana Signature Project is not a legalization initiative. It's something far more sinister.

ONDCP's latest blog post, delightfully titled "Relying on Science to Craft Drug Policy," boasts of using our tax dollars to a finance a series of science experiments aimed at figuring out where marijuana is grown:
The drug control policy office is betting on stable isotopes to identify unique markers in marijuana, distinguishing it not just by geography but also by its cultivation method — for example, indoor versus outdoor.

"It’s an epidemiological and forensic public health investigation," said David Murray, chief scientist at the agency and director of its Counterdrug Technology Assessment Center. [NYTimes]
It is just hilarious that ONDCP is spending government funds to find out information that pot growers would gladly share if it wouldn't get them arrested. Dr. Murray, I know people that could tell you for free if your marijuana was grown indoors or out.

For an added touch of cuteness, here's the scientist behind the project feigning agnosticism about the marijuana debate:
Dr. West said his involvement in the project was not tied to any particular policy judgment. "I strongly believe that part of the picture in any policy development has to be the best possible science, and in cases where my work can contribute to that, I think that’s great," he wrote in an e-mail message.
Dr. West, you gullible dork, the point isn't to determine what our marijuana policy should be. They're trying to identify cultivation hotspots and send heavily armed narc-soldiers in there to slash and burn everything. If you're not trying to advance any "particular policy judgment," get the hell away from David Murray and stop collecting research grants from ONDCP.

Honestly, I'm hugely in favor of the feds wasting drug war dollars to discover that marijuana is grown basically anywhere you could think of. This ain't exactly drilling for oil. People grow pot wherever there aren’t a lot of drug cops around and make adjustments as necessary. It shouldn't take a laboratory in Salt Lake City to tell you this.

It is typical drug war hypocrisy that ONDCP sits around conducting forensic research, while they can't find so much as a gram to enable meaningful research into the drug's hotly contested medical applications.

We ought to be able to find a way to stop them from doing this...

But as long as they're spending the drug war money frivolously, I won't complain too much. ;)

ONDCP waste

ONDCP continues to waste federally appropriated moneys. To continue to fund this agency is to continue to piss away the tax payer's money for the sake of reefer madness. The ONDCP follows a doctrine of unabashed lies and bullshit that needs to not just be reassessed but eliminated.

If John Walters truly believes in the language of the Declaration of Independence he would move to abolish this federal bureaucracy.

Relying on Science

So the ONDCP is relying on science this time, eh? What did they rely on all the other times? Voodoo?

Regarding any research designed to determine where a weed as tough as marijuana is grown, I have this advice for all the ONDCP blog spies out there: marijuana will grow in asphalt.

Good luck on your research, guys.

...where is this asphalt located? If terrorists are growing heroin-strength pot on a high school basketball court in Portland, wouldn't we want to know about it? Yeah, that's what I thought.

What are YOU smoking?!?! And where would you find the claim that there is any marijuana that is the strength of heroin?!?! I usually read some pretty intelligent stuff here. But this astounds me! It sounds like the typical scare tactics, using lies, to make the public think that you are honest and truthful, like th ONDCP! No scientific study will affect any change when you spout nothing but propaganda that is full of mis-truths!. That is, unless, you have scientific results to back up your claims. I see, what you are doing, as fear mongering.

Asphalt Location

Where is this asphalt located? Exactly my point.

I foresee ambitious pot growers in California importing their asphalt from Miami. Perhaps they could slice out a section of pavement from a city street close to the Miami DEA’s office.

The asphalt would have indigenous organic debris imbedded into its surface. The material could be broken up, its organic matter extracted with a solvent, and the organic rich mixture sprayed over the growing area to add Florida spores, bug parts, soil chemistry, etc., to the marijuana crop. Any analysis would result in a positive for Florida grown pot—despite the fact it is grown in California.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Oh, yeah...

I neglected to mention, if hydroponics growers break the asphalt into small chunks, it can be used as a support medium for roots in place of rock wool. The material imbedded in the asphalt would then add its chemical signature to the plants grown in the medium.
