Understanding the Connections Between Trauma and Substance Use

Substance use and thus drug related harm occur within the context of people's lives including their experiences of trauma. As harm reduction service providers we must include a trauma analysis when working with people around their substance use and potential harm, continuing to locate our work within a harm reduction framework. This training is intended to support providers working with drug users in exploring and addressing the impact of trauma including sexual abuse on people's lives, families and communities. We will: * Introduce the impact of trauma on individuals, families and communities and relevant ways to integrate our understanding of trauma into harm reduction work * Explore the intersections between child sexual abuse, other forms of violence, drug use, harm reduction & systemic oppression * Support individual and community resiliency-based work as key to social change and transformation * Introduce participants to the principles and practices of Transformative Justice, exploring their relation to the principles and practices of Harm Reduction and how both work to respond to and prevent future incidences of child sexual abuse and other forms of intimate violence. * Introduce and invite specific ways to integrate CSA response and prevention into harm reduction programs and organizing.
