Members of the Unitarian Universalist religious denomination will vote on a drug policy "statement of conscience" next week (6/24) during their General Assembly. The statement, is supported by Unitarians for Drug Policy Reform (http://www.uudpr.org), is "remarkably good, according to UUDPR founder Charles Thomas," who told ABCNews.com it "recogniz[es] the distinction between use and abuse, and call[s] for removal of criminal penalties for possession."

Thomas said that religious leaders who support the drug war are "doing the exact opposite of what Jesus taught." UUDPR plans to engage such leaders in dialogue, and present the statement, assuming it passes, to other religious denominations for their consideration.
